Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance
Places of Pride Memorial Victoria

On 15 April 2016 I visited the Shrine of Remembrance, Victoria’s principal war memorial, built to honour those who served in the First World War and now commemorating all Australians who have served in conflict and peacekeeping operations. Designed by veterans Phillip Hudson and James Wardrop and inspired by classical architecture, compared to the ANZAC Memorial in Sydney or the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, the Shrine is symmetrical.
The main feature of the Shrine is the Sanctuary’s Stone of Remembrance inscribed with the phrase “Greater love hath no man,” and the Crypt containing all retired battle ensigns from Victoria and a monument of both First and Second World War Soldiers.
