I Was Only Doing My Job: Nominal Roll
About the Nominal Roll
What it is
The I Was Only Doing My Job: Nominal Roll is a record of the people whose stories are told, or may be told, on the podcast and across DocNetwork Productions. Each entry brings together a person's service details, service record, biography and sources.
It is an independent history project. It is not an official record, and it is not connected to the Second World War, Korean War, Vietnam War or other nominal rolls published by the Australian Government, or to the Australian War Memorial's Roll of Honour. It is not a complete list of those who served.
Who is included
A person may be included if they:
- are the subject of an episode
- are discussed in an episode, and the research holds real information about them
- have been researched for a possible future episode or article
Most entries are Australians who served in Australian forces. The Roll also includes Australians who served with other forces, and people from elsewhere whose service is part of Australia's military history.
What inclusion means
Inclusion is a record, not an honour or a judgement. Some people on the Roll were decorated, some were court-martialled, and many were neither. Entries aim to record what happened, including where a person fell short of what was expected of them.
How to read an entry
- Rank
- The rank a person is best known by, which is used in their heading.
- Rank on discharge
- Shown only where it differs from the above.
- Last unit
- The last unit recorded for the person, or the unit they are best known for.
- Conflicts
- The conflicts, operations and periods a person served in. The Interwar Period covers service between the two world wars, before the Australian Regular Army was established in 1947.
- Service record
- Key dates, drawn from service records and other sources.
- Unknown
- Used where a detail cannot be established.
- Sources
- The records and publications used for that entry. Where records conflict or are uncertain, the entry says so.
Entries change
Entries begin small and grow as research continues, so some are brief. Each entry shows a citation with the date you accessed it.
Corrections and additions
If you can correct or add to an entry, particularly as a family member, please email podcast@thedocnetwork.net. All decisions about entries rest with the author.
